Athens Cocktail Bars
Athens is an ideal city for bar hopping — the historic center is compact, there are amazing views waiting around every corner, and the bars themselves are top-notch. To prove the scene is truly world class, one of our favorite bar discoveries last summer was recently named as one of the fifty best bars in the world; what an accomplishment!
You might even discover your own gem along the way between my suggestions; the winding meandering nature of Athenian streets begs for this type of exploration.
The five bars listed here are all within a ten minute walk from Syntagma Square, and as you can see on the map, very close to one another. These bars focus heavily on mixology and creativity, using local flavors to create a tasty memory of your vacation.
The Bank Job is housed inside a former bank. The menu is only in Greek, but the bartender during our visit spoke English and was happy to help. I have no photos, but I assure you my drink was delicious and well-made! Also, we were immediately served water, as any responsible drinking establishment should.
As the name suggests, The Gin Joint specializes in gin. Last summer, they were featuring a different gin each week for €5. During our visit, this was a gin made in Kalamata, Greece, which was a great excuse to try a local product I can’t get at home! Appropriately, my gin and tonic was garnished with a Kalamata olive rather than the traditional lime wedge.
Round out your evening with a nightcap at Drunk Sinatra. Who really cares what’s on the menu with such an awesome name? Lots of outdoor seating, but it does fill up! The decor is bright and cheery (a change of pace from the first four bars) with a vintage vibe.
